Polish-Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut has been released by Belarus after more than five years in prison as part of a multi-country prisoner exchange involving Poland and other states. He was arrested in 2021 and sentenced to eight years on charges widely condemned as politically motivated, becoming a symbol of the crackdown on independent journalism under President Alexander Lukashenko. His release followed complex diplomatic negotiations reportedly involving the United States. Press freedom groups welcomed the development but stressed it does not signal systemic change, noting that many journalists and political prisoners remain detained in Belarus under restrictive legal conditions today across the country.
